With more than 30 years of teaching experience, Kumu Luana has developed a comprehensive curriculum and created an online learning system that makes learning ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language) fun, stress-free, and available to all. 

Learn new vocabulary words, sentence patterns, structures, and pronunciation. Assignments and activities help to strengthen basic Hawaiian language skills. Instructional videos and tutorials make the course interactive and engaging.

  • Papa Kupu Beginner

    Papa Kupu is a beginner online Hawaiian language course and is designed for first-time Hawaiian language learners and those who want a refresher in basic Hawaiian language. No prior Hawaiian language experience is necessary.

    Students will learn new vocabulary words, the alphabet, syllabary, descriptive sentences, locational sentences, ʻaike o, and ʻaike he. Weekly ʻōlelo noʻeau (Hawaiian proverbs) and wahi pana (storied places) are introduced to reinforce Hawaiian culture and worldview.

    Students will access the curriculum, instructional videos, learning activities, and assignments and interact with Kumu Luana through our online classroom.

  • Papa Muʻo Beginner 2

    Papa Muʻo is the level 2 beginner Hawaiian language online course. This course is designed for students who completed Papa Kupu and students who have had some prior language experience and are comfortable with the concepts taught in Papa Kupu (see description).

    Students will learn a/a me (and), pluralization, nā māka painu (tense), makemake, and kino ʻō/kino ʻā classification. Weekly ʻōlelo noʻeau (Hawaiian proverbs) and wahi pana (storied places) are introduced to reinforce Hawaiian culture and worldview.

    Students will access the curriculum, instructional videos, learning activities, and assignments and interact with Kumu Luana through our online classroom.

  • Papa Mohala (Advanced Beginner)

    Papa Mohala is the Advanced Beginner online course and is designed for students who completed Papa Kupu and Papa Muʻo and students who have prior language experience. Students who register for this course should be comfortable with all of the concepts taught in Papa Kupu and Papa Muʻo (see descriptions for those classes).

    Students in Papa Mohala will learn the following patterns - he “have a”, pepeke nonoʻa (possessives), ʻehia (how many), and telling time.

    Students will access the curriculum, instructional videos, learning activities, and assignments and interact with Kumu Luana through our online classroom.

  • Papa Māhuahua (Advanced Beginner 2)

    Papa Māhuahua is the Advanced Beginner 2 online ourse and is designed for students who completed Papa Mohala and students who have prior language experience. Students who register for this course should be comfortable with all of the concepts taught in Papa Kupu, Papa Muʻo, and Papa Mohala (see descriptions for those classes).

    In Papa Māhuahua, students will learn a variety of topics typically taught in a second year college-level course.
